Cape Town Fish Market (CTFM) opened its first location in 1997 in Cape Town's V&A Waterfront. Douw, the owner of CTFM, bought the small restaurant after working at a Spur Steak Ranch for 13 years. The idea for CTFM came about after Douw noticed how much better fresh fish tasted compared to the frozen fish served at most restaurants. CTFM has since grown to include 10 locations in South Africa, as well as locations in Tanzania, Zanzibar, and Windhoek. CTFM also had a successful franchise in London from 2005 to 2015
